THE RECORD
Not a pitch. A paper trail.
Fifty years, documented. Every entry below is dated, and every claim is drawn from Michael Rutherford's own archive — screens, schematics, photographs, and published pages, preserved and verified. This page exists for the people who check before they commit.
Start My Path PlanThe Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons kitchens in Chicago. Cajun and Creole country in Louisiana. An Orange County home, with offices in San Francisco and across five states. And in 2026, home to Michigan. Along the way: general manager of a Best Western, and trained in Miller Heiman and The One Minute Manager.
How to read this record
What follows is the evidence layer — the dated spine of a fifty-year working life. The fuller archive behind it — the original screens, the hand-drawn schematics, the photographs, the published pages — is preserved and available on request. Nothing here is rounded up, and where a date is a range, it is shown as a range.
The Chef
The record starts in a kitchen, with credentials earned the slow way — apprenticeship, competition, and a full page in the hometown paper.
- 1977ACF Apprentice. The apprenticeship begins — the foundation everything else stands on.
- 1981SWMCA Apprentice of the Year.
- 1982ACF/NRA Gold Medal Winner. Graduate of Washburne Culinary. Internships followed in 1982–83 at The Signature Room, on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Center, and The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago.
- 1982The Grand Haven Tribune gives him a full page: “The Ice Man” / “The Ice Man Cometh” — his ice sculpture work at the Ritz-Carlton / Four Seasons Hotel Chicago.
- 1985Louisiana. Cajun & Creole cuisine; featured in Baton Rouge Magazine, December 1985, with Gary Bonanno. In his kitchen, LSU students worked their way through school — the first classroom he ever ran was a line.
T.U.R.N.S. — The Ultimate Real-Estate Network System
Before Windows, before the web, a working real-estate network — designed on paper, built in DOS, and sold by the seat. Michael was the architect and visionary; he hand-drew the schematics. He was mentored by Bob Parker (Robert Parker, d. 1994). The code was written first by Alan Weiner (d. 2001), then by BJ Hart; David Henderson is also credited.
- 1988–90The system: MLS integration from county tapes and microfiche — at $25K per county — EDI, Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac forms, running on DOS, pre-Windows, at $150 per month per office seat.
- 1989From his Best Western office, he transferred the accounting books to Canyon Lake over a phone line at 240 characters a second (2400 bps) —
“We thought we were magicians.”
- FirstHis technology work began as a buyer: he bought a point-of-sale / information system for the hotel — bookings, reservations, accounting — and ran it. Buyer and operator first, builder second. That order has never reversed.
Radiant / Aloha — the point-of-sale years
From a start-up team to a billion-dollar acquisition, inside the company that put Aloha point-of-sale into restaurants across the country.
- 2003Joins the Aloha Inc start-up team.
- 2008Radiant Systems acquires Aloha. Radiant's Aloha stack, in its own four words:OPERATEMEASUREMANAGEMARKET
- 2009The W Hollywood / Drai's opening era. A Radiant terminal photographed on a Walk of Fame star, December 6, 2009, captioned: “This is a Radiant City.”
- 2010April 21, 2010 — his own SaaS Hospitality Technology Symposium, Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown, 9:30 AM–4:00 PM. PCI-DSS as the headliner, two free two-hour training courses, nine demo stations — and the room photographed in session.
- 2010September 2010 — the Stacked TABLESERVICE deployment: iPad table kiosks end to end — menu, build-your-own, checkout, and a signature screen bearing his name — through to the kitchen and expo line.
- 2011NCR acquires Radiant Systems for $1.2B.
LeaderTracker / Accredited Portfolios
The method takes its modern shape: a learner, a panel of experts, and a plan worked in stages — the direct ancestor of everything being built in Michigan today.
- 2009Accredited Portfolios formed, in partnership with TIfPI (The Institute for Performance Improvement) and its founders, Deb Page and Dr. Judy Hale.
- 2014The team roster: Judith Hale · Deb Page · Rick King (Partner) · Michael J Rutherford (Director) · Jack Stevens (Consultant) · Ray Merrill (Managing Partner, Software Development).
- PanelsExpert Path Panels — “8 Mentors, 1 Learner.” 70 case studies. ProStart / NRA connections. Every path plan moves through four stages:1 · Inputs2 · Suggest & Negotiate3 · Execute4 · Next StepsAnd rests on three key components:CommunicationRepository of InformationCollaborationThe toolkit: LeaderTracker · ePortfolios · Collaborate · Growth Plans.
- 2014The facilitator doctrine, in his own 2014 definitions — the four hats a facilitator wears:TrainerSupervisorCoachRole Model
- EssayFrom The Emerging Leader Program essay:
“Great leadership comes out of hard work but also of being coached, supported and mentored.”
- 2015June 3, 2015 — The Millennial Workforce Development Community: competency over seat time. Its banner line: “Today's Students — Tomorrow's Leaders!”
The Agent Model & the School Research
Two documents from these years carry the whole 2026 design: a partner program built on field representatives, and a study of what makes students flourish.
- 2012July 16, 2012 — the Brink Software “SaaS Agent Partner Program”: recruiting experienced field reps into new markets, with partnership agreements of up to 50%. It is the direct ancestor of the 2026 student affiliate program.
- 2013“Climate Change: Can School Environment Affect Test Scores?” — his school-climate research, across four categories:Administrative LeadershipSocial & Interpersonal InteractionCivic Awareness / Democratic ValuesConfidence of School-site Factors
“If we want to see students and teachers flourish, we must create a safe, nurturing environment that respects diversity and promotes collaboration.”
— the study's conclusion, verbatim
The National Network Mission and Plan
Drawn from the ACT Foundation and the Business Roundtable, this is the national frame his work has answered to — five planks, unchanged:
- OneConnect what America learns to how business works.
- TwoA common language of employability skills.
- ThreeCredentials matched to job opportunities.
- FourBusiness-led training, apprenticeship, and internship programs.
- FiveTake the model mainstream.
“People Are Hungry for Competencies and Not Degrees Alone.”
The Constants
Tools changed five times. These three lines never did.
“Many times people fail because they are not coached.”
“Technology doesn't fail businesses — the lack of coaching does.”
Home to Michigan
The record comes home. secondchancepathways.com dba rezconnect.store now carries the work forward: The School Ecosystem; Walk the Beat, carried forward — created by Dave Palmer, with Becky Newman its president and a true mentor of the mission; and the student e-portfolio pathway, grades 8–12 into college and careers. The method is the one on this page, unchanged across fifty years: assess first, work the plan step by step, a coach beside the builder.
